European Directives on Safety and Health at work
Directive 89/391/EEC - OSH "Framework Directive"
The aim of this Directive is to introduce measures to encourage improvements in the safety and health of workers at work. It applies to all sectors of activity, both public and private, except for specific public service activities, such as the armed forces, the police or certain civil protection services.
This Directive is basic for all Laws and Regulations related to safety and health for workers at work.
Workshop on CEN standard EN 16704, Safety protection on the track during work.
The International Union of Railways (UIC) and the European Federation of Railways Trackworks Contractors (EFRTC) jointly organised a workshop on 18 and 19 February on CEN standard EN 16704 “Railway applications – Track – Safety protection on the track during work”.
The purpose of CEN standard EN 16704 is to define a common approach to railway safety in relation to track work. National safety rules (for example national standards or company rules) should gradually be harmonised in line with or be replaced by rules contained in this standard. See summary of all presentations of the workshop.
All presentations will follow soon.
Learning from History - It has been more than ten years since someone was fatally injured in a train accident on the UK's main rail network. The risk profile of train accidents in the UK can be attributed to a number of improvements that have been made over the years. As part of this learning process, we know that accident investigation is an essential ingredient, as is retaining acquired knowledge. It remains more important than ever for our industry to remember what happened, the causal factors and what improvement actions were taken. The attached report aims to remind us of all train accidents that occurred between 1981 and 2017 and the main lessons learned We owe it to keep the passengers and personnel killed and injured in the accidents alive while we maintain, design, and build the railroad. It helps keep the railroad safer today and tomorrow.
